The Yuma County Water Users’ Association (Yuma, Arizona) was founded in 1903, just one year after the passing of the Reclamation Act, as a private non-profit corporation under the laws of the Territory of Arizona for the development and funding of the Valley Division of the Yuma Project. The Project is one of the oldest and most successful of Reclamation projects. Landowners hold the most senior Colorado River water entitlements in the state The Valley Division of the Project has some 53,450 irrigable acres in Arizona. Some 45,000 acres of prime farmland are currently farmed, producing annually over 80,000 crop acres due to year round multi cropping. The Association also delivers over 95% of the City of Yuma's water supply and will in the future also deliver Colorado River water to the Cities of Somerton and San Luis.

The Yuma County Water Users' Association announces the completion of the reconstruction of a portion of our high voltage power transmission line. The line, a joint-use project with Arizona Public Service (APS), extends from 15th Street to Westridge Drive along Avenue A. The new transmission line contains facilities for both the Association and APS, and will likely be a point of attachment for Qwest communications as well.

In preparation for the widening of Avenue A, the City of Yuma worked with the Association and APS to provide a single-line solution to serve the needs of the agencies. By relocating all of the overhead utilities to one pole line, aesthetics are greatly improved. The new facility is constructed using the latest in materials technology and promises decades of worry free service.

The Association is pleased to announce the receipt of a third water conservation grant through the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. This grant provides $74,600 dollars for the purchase of advanced flow measurement equipment, both fixed and portable instruments.

The Association plans to implement trial instrumentation from various manufacturers this year, with final purchases being made in 2010. In all, it is anticipated that a total of twelve sites within our system will be upgraded to provide real-time flow data to our 24-hour dispatch center.

The Association received some $246,000 dollars in 2004 for technological improvements and modernization of our irrigation delivery system, as well as $300,000 dollars in 2005 for concrete lining of select portions of our canal system.
